Acting Technique Courses

Each drama course can be taken on-line, using the same process as any academic on-line course.  Critique is provided on your recorded progress made throughout the course.  Each drama course follows a different approach to dramatic technique, therefore each course is unique.

  • Drama 10:  You will work to develop dramatic technique in an analytical way.  Instead of working face to face with other students and an instructor, you will be exploring the art of acting on your own, primarily through intellectual work with your text.  The focus in this course is on examining a character by examining the text of the play. This approach was developed by Uta Hagen, and is very accessible for students who already excel in English class.

  • Drama 11:  You will focus on exploring the life of the character. You will explore a Russian-centric approach to character development, creating the character naturally over a long process.  The theorist we will be following in this course is Konstantin Stanislavski. Offshoots of his theory became what is today known as “Method Acting.”

Drama 11 Assignments and Curriculum

  • Drama 12:  You will be challenged to integrate modern movement theory with your dramatic technique. You will be studying a process known as Psychological Gesture to create your performance in a simple, intuitive way. You will also explore movement theory created by Rudolf Laban, which is meant to help you see and understand your character using shapes. Instead of working face to face with other students and an instructor, you will be exploring the art of acting on your own. But don't worry, you aren't alone.

Company or Ensemble Technique Courses

Each of these courses requires students to be engaged in a combined 60 hours of performance and rehearsal, with a studio, dance company or theatre company. The focus of these courses is exploring and experiencing the world of putting on a production.  Not as much specialized acting technique is provided in these courses, as students will be working with a director and it is critical that they not be working against the director's expectations or vision.
