Dance Movement Technique Courses

Each of these courses requires registration in 60 hours or more of dance with a studio, per course. This is approximately 2 hours a week in a 30 week dance season.  This may be in a single dance style or a combination of styles.  Below each category are links to an outline of the course assignments and the related curriculum by grade level.

NOTE: It is strongly recommended that students take Dance Foundations before taking either the Technique and Performance course or the Dance Company course.  Once they are completed the second unit in that course, they can sign up for Dance Technique and Performance or Dance Company.

Dancers need to only take Dance Foundations once through grades 10-12. Figure Skaters and Gymnasts are encouraged to take it each year, as those versions of the course have been designed differently.

  • Dance Foundations:  You will work to develop expression of yourself through movement in one or more styles of dance.  In addition, you will explore the world of dance and all it encompasses beyond the techniques involved - from preparing to dance safely, through understanding what makes studios unique and effective places to learn, to exploring ways to feed your creative muse while staying healthy and exploring what can be learned from watching other dancers perform. You will be working with a dance studio to develop your dance technique in your chosen style(s). There are separate versions of these courses designed specifically for figure skaters and artistic or rhythmic gymnasts.

Choreography and Conditioning Courses

The following courses DO NOT require instruction from a studio. All of the instruction is included within the courses.

  • Dance Choreography:  You will explore the creative process that transforms an inspiration into a dance. You will learn how to tap into your creativity to find inspiration, analyze music and movement, and how to apply the elements of dance and stage production to create a solo or group number, depending upon grade level.
